Salmonella Scare: Dr. Manny Answers

Your Questions,
With the egg recall reaching 380 million and still spreading from state to state, Americans are paying special attention to a microscopic invader that can wreak havoc on the human body: Salmonella.

It’s rare to see a recall of this magnitude in the United States, but when we do, consumers are reminded that food-borne illnesses are more common than we think and we have to pay special attention to the way our meals are handled and prepared.

I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails about this recall, so I decided to answer some of your questions.

Egg Recall Expands Again, May Be Nationwide Problem

"We are undertaking this additional recall to further protect the safety of consumers -- this voluntary measure is consistent with our commitment to egg safety, and it is our responsibility," the company said in its statement. The company initially recalled 228 million eggs.

Cases of Salmonella enteritidis were first reported in California, Colorado and Minnesota, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and state health officials are now investigating salmonella outbreaks in Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas.

Half a billion eggs have been recalled,

The Egg Safety Center has a complete list of recalled eggs, their expiration dates, and brands. Check the situation in your state. Here are safety tips.

(CNN) -- The number of eggs recalled in a nationwide salmonella scare has grown to more than half a billion.

Iowa egg producer Hillandale Farms of Iowa is voluntarily recalling some 170.4 million eggs distributed to stores and companies that service, or are located in, 14 states, a spokeswoman at the Egg Safety Center said on Friday.

I tossed out my little carton of 6 eggs even though they weren't on the recall list. $0.65 is not a lot to pay for peace of mind and to head off the possibility that my eggs would be added to the recall list. I didn't have time to egg-xamine the facility code to make sure I didn't end up with egg on my face.

Just do scrambled eggs and make sure the entire thing gets HOT and you are fine. There is no reason to throw away non recalled eggs. Doing so and refusing to buy more will mean massive drops for small egg producers.

but this whole story may be edge effects, and of course it also affects the small producers..

I'm not refusing to buy more. I'm just playing it ultra safe and not risking anything over a carton of eggs I paid $0.65 for.

No Evidence Tainted Eggs Go Beyond 2 Farms.

WASHINGTON — Food and Drug Administration officials said Monday that there is no evidence a massive outbreak of salmonella in eggs has spread beyond two Iowa farms, though a team of investigators is still trying to figure out what caused it.

FDA officials said they do not expect the number of eggs recalled — 550 million — to grow
