Defecting to Russia by flying through Chinese airspace sounds like a tough trip. Does the '21 have enough fuel for the trip to Russia? Probably not if the pilot is flying NW.

As someone here hinted too I think he was planing on making a right turn over China and heading north east for an airfield near Vladivostok.

Looking at the image... dang, that looks to be an old, beat-up plane. Perhaps it's a wonder she even managed to take off.

It's definatley a Mig-21, look at the top left by where the canopy is. See the hump
