Its just to depressing and makes me want to throw the PC out of the window.
I'm not aware that saves regularly get corrupted, if you have a good working install and avoid doing things that are known to be problematic (as described above). But occasionally they do happen, because sometimes files on a computer get corrupted somewhere in the process of creating/saving/moving/accessing them and that's just how it goes.

If it's happening on a regular basis with a particular install of the game, chances are there's a reason for it that can be pinned down and addressed in some way.

Personally I've put in hours of game time over many careers and made many saves, sometimes a dozen or more in the same patrol, and I've never had an issue loading a save that wasn't attributable to something I did to bork things up in between gaming sessions.

Noooo, don't give up! Yes, it's not nice to lose a career in this way but it is only occasionally. I'm suffering at the minute and can't fathom out why but intend to restart a fresh career that will be better for my experience - I'll still not sink anything but hey, don't let the gremlins grind you down

You say you have a 'clean install'....that probably means you've had a previous install, yes?

Did you perform a registry clean before your 'clean install'?

Did you delete the SH3 folder in C\MyDocs?

Do you still have the default 'Player' name on your save file screen?

Clean install, as I had reinstalled OS (as a total system clean up to factory/shipping state) so no registry fragments or files to worry about

I have already uninstalled SH3, but fairly sure 'player' was still there; does 'player' affect saves?

Perhaps I will reinstall and give SH£ a last chance, what are the registry remnants that should be deleted (regedit) before a reinstall?

Deleting the 'Player' name is suspected by some to be a possible reason for future game save problems.

CTD's are a constant pain, even in open water I've had some go south for no apparent reason. One item that seems to negatively affect your savegames is having hull damage or any portions of your ship destroyed. Taking damage is part of the game, when it happens wait till you're out of danger or out least out of range of any ships/coastal artillery that could possibly hit you. It makes things frustrating that during a prolonged attack/escape you could easily spend 5-10 hours and if you end up sinking all that progress is lost. You can roll the bones and sometimes get lucky with saving underwater, though make sure your sound indicator is all green and you're not moving; you've got about a 1/3 chance the save will work. If you have to use it though, you'll find that your deck is manned by your watch team while submerged.

The golden rule for saving whilst surfaced is....there should be NOTHING within rendering range of you (50km radius).
