Default New Command Question

Is it possible to be offered a command of a boat before the Gato Class? I have started with a S Class and a Porpoise and when i am offered my first new command its always a Gato.

Has anyone been offered a Salmon,Sargo or Tambor Classes?

Entirely possible.
I think it depends on where and when you are offered it.

In the past I have been promoted from:
A Pigboat to a Salmon
A Porpoise to a Gar.

Both times I was in Freemantle, having started my career in Manilla for ComSubSoWesPac.

When I have started careers from Pearl (Porpoise or Narwahl), I tend to get given a Gato for my first promotion.

Seems like I got a Tambor, but I started in 42 out of Brisbane.

I just went from an S boat to a Salmon. This was out of Brisbane, and I started in Manila.

Thanks for the replies! I think my problem has been that i almost always start from Pearl or Midway. I'll try some of the other bases and see how that goes.

I think the time and date that you begin your command also has an effect on what newer sub you might get offered as well.Pearl has the Gato available from the start while Brisbane and the Asiatic only have Tambor or Gar at best until 1943 so what is available in your command seems to have an effect.

In other words if you perform very well out of Pearl you might be offered a Gato class sub at some point in 1942.But out of the Asiatic fleet you might not get offered a Gato in 1942 at all you'll get a Tambor or Gar or maybe a Sargo if you aren't already in command of one. That is how it seems to work me anyway.

I've only played one career that wasn't out of Pearl and that was on a happenstance transfer to FreeMantle in a Porpoise Class. I definitely gotta try an S-Boat on my next career. I have absolutely no experience in an S-Boat.

You really should do a tour in an old S-Boat WernherVonTrapp I think you will like it.Nothing like going into action in an old Pig Boat you'll really feel satisfied when you sink some tonnage in one it is a real blast.Well for you anyway not so much for the other guy.

New boat availability is found in the flotilla.upc file. If you start at Freemantle command and you want to remain there do not elect to take one until the Gatos become available. All transfers until then will transfer you to Pearl. Since I don't like the missions from Pearl, I always turn down any new boats before 1942 ends. Taking on the Luzon invasion fleet, evading the many escorts, sinking a few troop ships and getting away is too much fun to miss.

Gato class availability
Pearl Harbor 3-1-1942
Freemantle 12-1-1942

Oh, its a blast for him too!

I agree, though, the S-Class is really very fun It makes the subsequent upgrades very much sweeter and more appreciated!! I'm on career right now where I upgraded from Sboat to Salmon class (I'm based in Brisbane) and it is really nice to have all those torpedoes now! I very much look forward to surface radar in the future, but for now this Salmon class is refreshing after being in the S-boat for 3 war patrols.

I often like to run an S-Boat out of Brisbane in 42 you can use the SJ then and you also are in a very busy AO as well.Though for me for some reason when I play an S-Boat out of Brisbane the weather is foul so I get most kills with the deck gun though fog by getting his bearing and getting as close as I dare taking blind shots at where I think he is until I hear a shell hit while praying that he does take a pop shot at where he thinks I am.
