Default New to modding, how to use jsgme?

I have Gwx 3 and want to try some more mods. I'm not a computer whiz can someone give me easily understood instructions on how to download, unzip and import a mod into jsgme. How about the lifeboat and debris mod for an example

Download: If a mod is put up for download, you usually just click on the link. That will take you to a window on a website, and it should have a clicky that says DOWNLOAD. Click that. A window will come up that gives options: Open Save Cancel. I always click Save, because I like to have all the mods stored on my computer.

Another window will pop up, asking where you want to save it. I have a folder on my desktop labeled 'New Mods', with separate folders for SH3, SH4 and SH5. After I've tried them I move them to a folder in 'My Documents'.

Unzip: You need a zipping tool. www.7zip.com is the most effective so far. It will open anything. Download 7-Zip to your desktop and run it once. After that when you download a mod you can right-click on the zipped mod and select 'Open with 7-zip'. You can then take the regular folder from the zipped one and move it to the MODS folder inside the SH3 folder.

Activate: Open JSGME. Click on the mod. Click on the single arrow. If it says that other mods are using that file, you need to ask someone here if that will have a negative effect or not. After a few times doing this you'll start to get a feel for what will cause trouble and what will not.

The good news is that if you make a mistake and a mod has an effect you don't want you can use JSGME to take it right back out again.

Exactly what I was looking for. I tried downloading some before asking this last night and I think I messed it up I saved them to the mods folder and they appear on the list in jsgme but they don't work. I don't think they unzipped or I might have double foldered them.
Will I have Any problems if I just delete all those mods and download them correctly?

I used to do this a lot when I first started playing with mods

Should be fine.
Just remember to disable anything you want to get rid of before you delete it.

Thanks everything I've tried so far has worked fine. What is the button for free movement inside the sub? I want to check out my new interior. And Also should I upgrade jsgme to 2.5? It seems like I would have to do a completely separate install

I've noticed a couple funny things. Are the das boot clothes supposed to still have rank on the sleeves and shoulders? And I enabled the das boot video then disabled it later but I still plays anyway. Same with integrated orders, the little boxes are still there but I cant click on some commands. I was gonna re enable it but it supposedly conflicts with thomsens sound

I can't comment on Das Boot Video or Integrated Orders, as I don't use either, but for the Insignia:

Re Integrated Orders, are the commands you can't click on unavailable ALL the time, even when you should be able to give the associated order?

The only ones that should be clickable at any given moment are the ones that you can actually use in that situation. For instance, if you're submerged then the icons for ordering men to the guns will be disabled because you can't give that order underwater. Once you surface, they'll be available again (weather and sea state permitting).

Other than that, do be aware that the Integrated Orders mod overwrites the game's commands.cfg files, so it will conflict with any other mod that overwrites them unless you manually edit them to contain everything needed by both mods (provided that is possible).

I don't think I've used the GWX Das Boot video mod, but in GWX there's always some type of video footage playing in that part of the screen. I'm pretty sure the "Das Boot" footage is in color, though, so if you're seeing video in B&W I think that's what you're supposed to get normally (without the mod).

yeah, some orders are unavailable all the time, like periscope depth and captains log/go to bed. it conflicts for me with thomsens sound mod, so i guess i'll have to choose one unless anyone knows if there is a safe overwrite for this

You need to look at all the files contained in both mods. Where one mod overwrites a file that the other mod also overwrites, you'll have a potential conflict.

Making them compatible means finding where those conflicts exist, and then trying to manually edit the files both mods use so that you have one group of shared files containing all the data and/or modifications that both mods need to function properly.

(I have not looked at Thomsen's Sound Mod so I don't know what might be conflicting with what, but I can tell you that if it contains its own versions of the commands cfg files, either it will bork up Integrated Orders or be borked up by it depending on the order in which you enable them.)
