Default Things you learned from SubSim?

For the longest time I thought the periscope was a telescoping system- 3 or 4 sections like a car radio antenna. Since viewing a couple of diagrams and schematics here, I found it's a single tube, height depending on the overall vertical size of the hull. Mind you, this was back when I first wandered into a sub game like '3'.

Share your "new learnings'?

Everybody knows something somebody else doesn't. I learn something new here almost every day.

I learned that in RL, going ahead flank with my periscope up while submerged would prolly break it right off. And then there's the vibrations that make it essentially useless at anything between that and slow ahead. Now when I play I can't go faster than 2-3 knots with 'er up or I feel like I'm cheating.

With that in mind I feel compelled to say, once again, THANKS FOR NOTHING SAILOR STEVE.

I also learned about the differences between the observation 'scope and the attack 'scope, and why/when one would be preferable to the other in various situations.

And about a million other things.

Like Frau Kaleun, I learned about the speed limitation of the periscope.

I learned about only having steamer torpedoes in the external stores.

I learned how to operate the TDC manually.

I learned the Fixed Wire method of manual targeting.

Tons of other stuff.

I didn't really mean about game things, I meant about real subs.
I wasn't aware that the 7 had external stowage.

But the periscope problem is a real thing. I learned about it some time ago, but I don't remember from whom. A lot of those I just use without thinking about it these days.

Real u-boats? Most of what I know I've known for awhile. The problem is that when I do learn something new I usually catalogue it and don't think about it again.

I learned that in almost every instance you can count on your thread being answered or commented on by someone.

In the rare case no one does, make a reply yourself...for some reason an answered post draws attention.

I was trying to be serious here, Semi. If you want to play the dozens, call it out.

I learned about the trigonometry (but still can't wrap my pinhead around it) involved in the fire point to impact solution.

I learned how to stalk, how to hunt and how to pretend i wasn't there. how to curl up inside my own backside when being depth charged and how to pray.
i learned to plot and intercept ships, how to target them manually and how to dance for joy when my torpedo's take them down!
i also learned to respect the royal navy and cower whenever i hear sonar...

Like Sailor Steve, i'm learning new things each time. But the most important thing I've learned, is that you can blame any mishaps on Bernard.

I've leant that you must give explicit instructions, plotting a course out of the harbour isn't good enough, you must tell the lazy nav to follow it as well!

Oh, and I've never been a member of an online forum before, popped into a few to get some tech answers generally about PCs, but this is the first I've 'joined' and been continually involved with since. Thank you to all the replies to my questions, the hints and tips in myriad posts, and to all the modders whose downloads make SH3 more than just a playable game!

I learned that none of us is as clever as all of us.

I also learned that Seminoles theory/statement above is quite correct

The first thing I learned from Subsim is that Vegemite should not be consumed by the spoonful.

About subs in general... well lessee here:

I've learned that just because a sail has windows in it does not mean that one could stand in there and see out of them while underwater.

I learned that torpedoes were still a really quirky technology in WWII. I had always thought of them running a straight line to the ship and exploding on contact every time. Not so much the case in reality. Now I know why some of the torpedoes I fire in SH3 are duds.

Also learned about Q-ships. Had never heard of them until I'd been here awhile.
