Oh I agree! Those sonnets nearly became the end of me in English class last year...oooh the horror...but his influence cannot be ignored, nor the fact that we still read his work after several hundred years!

Who writes that doesn't have a Shakespearian like comparison in thier head afterwards? I'd say its the norm. Just like watching a kung fu movie and feeling like Bruce Lee afterwards.
