Jimbunas' most favorite drink?
One that he didn't pay for.

According to the table, the type VII's had a range of 12.000 miles in stock SH3, but 15.000 miles in GWX. (For why that is, see the manual, they explain it very well). The various type IX's had varying ranges, ranging from 16.000 miles for the IXB, to a staggering 44.000 miles for the IXD2!
(20.000 and 55.000 respectively in GWX)

The slower you go, the further you can travel (less rpms for the diesels). The type VII traditionally cruised at about 7 knots, which seemed to be the most fuel efficient speed. The faster you go, the more fuel you burn, of course.
Result:
GWX is more accurate for East/West trips.
Stock is more accurate for North/South trips.

You can do a lot worse than those, indeed! (*cough* Heineken *cough*)
Better would have been:

Provided you didn't have to pay for it, I understand...

if you alternate between the deisels and elctric engines by going to periscope depth can you increase your range?

No. Reason being it takes fuel to recharge your batteries.
One of your engines will be running at flank to perform the recharge.
You'll actually end up decreasing your range.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner- been away for the weekend. Anyway, cheers for all the useful responses. It particularly cheered me up on a Monday morning to see that my thread had turned into a discussion about beer, now I'm not sure whether I want to talk about the game or beer.... Most interesting of note to me is the fact that travelling on the E-motors for parts of your trip does not increase your range due to the diesel required to recharge the batteries. And there I was thinking I was saving fuel! Presumably this applies even if you're not in recharge mode?
So ultimately then, it is a case of employing a bit of 'Kentucky Mileage', so to speak. That's cool. Actually I just finished my first patrol and still had some in the tank, so I think I'm getting the hang of it- I guess if you run out of fuel you've had it? Game over?

Actually if you're playing at less than 100% you can teleport home, fuel or no. It's a cheat, and I only use it when my rudders are damaged, and the boat could still be steered (sort of) with just the engines. But it's there if you need it.

how do you steer with just the engines
i know its possible but i couldnt work it out last time my rudder got blown off by a depth charge (once one of my own passive acoustic homing torps. i forgot to dive after firing them)

This has been discussed over and over for years in many threads.
For me, the answer is yes, by a slight margin, due to the difference between the engines efficiencies.
This said, I will not begin a new flame war, and will not post more on this subject. If you want details, use the search button..

You don't. It was possible in real life, but not in the game. That is why I leave it at 99%, so the teleport function still works.

No flames here. What you say is true, at least for the game. In real life it takes more energy to recharge the batteries than it does to travel the same distance surfaced. The game has it wrong. Fixed in SH4.
