Perhaps the lead escort happened to be facing the other direction both times. They wouldn't be able to hear you, and you'd be outside the ASDIC cone. If I'm getting detected in 1940, then there's something going on here. I've attacked a couple of convoys since this post came out. Keeping your distance certainly does the trick as long as you don't make much noise.
