I'm just guessing that, because that feature makes it easy to double check your range calculator by using the ruler...
There will be nothing on the chart but you.

It's a scary step, but once you take it you'll never want to go back.

Having them on doesnt exactly seem that big an issue anyway for me,it would seem feasible (in real life) that the watch officer and the watch crew would be providing as much positioning data as possible for the captain during an attack procedure.I DO like gathering all my own attack data though (manual targetting) as I never use a weapons officer, the only role he has on my UBoat is to assist in loading the torpedoes and supplying me weapons management.
Most of the time the captain would probably be in his bunk reading 20,000 leagues under the sea or something,or sifting through the huge pile of German pin up girl magazines under his bed

Paul,
How fast were you going when the Granville spotted you?

I've found that shadowing a target above standard usually gets you spotted, depending on conditions, as well as your aspect to the target, even at 8km.

If conditions allow, I'll shadow/end round at about 10-12km and sometimes greater if conditions warrant it. I keep close tabs on my speed though. If I need to go to full or flank, I'll pull out of sight, scoot along for an hour and ease back in to keep tabs on my target to make sure he hasn't changed course. Rinse and repeat until I'm in attack position.

Like so much of this game, patience is key.

We were matching his speed at around 10 kts, didnt seem to be much bow spray.Conditions WERE however very clear,no wind and only light cloud cover.
It is so true when they say "if you can see him so can he see YOU" ,makes for a better game actually, forces you to plan your moves with more thought.Suffice to say he was a lucky sod!
Dont worry,he will be paying a visit to the depths before too long

I've found that in dead calm weather situations, they can spot a bow wave at a great distance.
If you'd have had a bit of chop on the water you probably would have got away with it.

I got spotted and engaged by a destroyer escorting a convoy last night in early 1942 at 8300 meters.

I have the 16k mod enabled.

Early 1942?
I'm sure the Brits were busy installing Radar on their destroyers by then.
