I have a fairly good handle on our respective terminologies. I was just havin' fun with yas.

And I hate fish.

But there's nothing like a nice big cod fillet, properly battered and deep-fried, drizzled with fresh lemon juice and malt vinegar...

Mmmm-hmmm...

Hadn't ever tried fish with a vinegar of any kind though.

I never liked tartar sauce so once I learned to put lemon on fish that was my favorite when I could get it... until malt vinegar.

My dad learned to eat fish'n'chips with malt vinegar in England during the war but we never had it around here, until an "Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips" place opened up nearby. They had malt vinegar in little packets like fast food ketchup. I tried it because he was using it and OMG I loved it.

They closed down after a bit but most of the fast food fish places here still have it on the condiment stand. And the int'l market here carries bottles of it imported from the UK (and maybe other places, altho I haven't looked for it outside the UK aisles). I imagine it's way better than what comes in thost l'il fast food packets.

Maybe some of the Brits here could recommend a preferred brand?

Yep, Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips. I would eat there when I was a kid. I do not have a restaurant local now. The malt vinegar made the meal. The good old days.....

I don't know if it's just a case of "grumble grumble things were better in the olds days" but it seems like AT's was soooo much better than what's around now. Long John Silver's and Captain D's is what we have here.

Even LJS doesn't seem as good as it used to be, I worked in one for a couple years just out of high school and I remember it being much better back then than it is now.

I have not tried a Long Johns. To be honest, I have not had malt vinegar on fish since Arthur Treacher's. I just might get a bottle when we have our next fish fry.

Well, hate is a strong word. I've eaten all kinds of fish, including shark. My mom used to grill a great catfish.

It's just something I don't actively pursue. Like Chinese.

It should be your patriotic duty to eat Cod on Independence Day.

Check out

Kurlansky, M., (1998) Cod: A biography of the Fish that Changed the World

(Which is actually a pretty interesting book)
