Did you attend school in Kansas, too? That state is always coming up with excuses for why it shouldn't just be considered a flat, boring state in the middle of many truly great states (except for Oklahoma, which is even worse, as evidenced by the fact that we sent all the Indians there. IIRC, the motto is "Ad aspera per aspera", which means: "We are hopeless optimists".
