An interesting find that adds to the charm of the Declaration of Independence.

Makes you wonder what other single last-minute word changes there have been...

(PS. That's your cue to add some potentially funny changes to speech)

Actually if you read Jefferson's rough draft side-by-side with the published version you will see a lot of changes and corrections. Jefferson's original phrase was "We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable", which historical opinion is that "self-evident" was Ben Franklin's idea, but no one knows for sure. On July 3rd Congress has a whole dumped Jefferson's favorite part - the bit where he blames King George for slavery. Probably best that they pulled it out, since England had already outlawed the practice.

Here is a funny modern interpretation.

And here is a collection of even funnier ones.

It is a good thing Jefferson threw away his very first draft. The one that mentions "me and the homies"

Thankfully the one that started out "Liburtee - we can haz it!" also went into the dustbin.

Öh...äh... ehem... yes.

You see, in Germany we have all those many documents of yours rolled into just one. I tend to throw constitution, declaration and amendements all into one bin, like ingredients for a pie. And after all, there are indeed not three different USAs, but just one, so maybe I can be forgiven.

Oh, just fall back on "I don't live there; what do I know?" and get it out of the way.

Or ask me what I know about the German Constitution.

Thats a beautiful part of that document.

wow.

these were thinking men for sure.

"No no... subjects sounds too much like what we're trying to get away from... lets say 'citizens' instead."

one can see that they put a lot of thought into what they were writing
