my deck gun fires 16 inch shells
if any of you had read any other htreads, it all pretty much involves decimating convoys. well yet again i find an unescorted convoy.
i fire a torp at over half of them and about 4 are left unscathed. i surface to finish off the damaged ones. so i sink two damaged, then i fire on a healthy one and the first two shots put its health down to 3/4 another one put it to 2/3. the next shell......was like subnuclear. i fire another shell right through a porthole i think and the boat lifts up out of the water like 10 feet and it comes down severed in half. the health bar completely vanished and it just went off like a nuclear Firecraker. in 4 shots i put down a freighter. and im playing stock. dam i mustve found the g spot or something. Cargoes vary on the ships. That one may have been carrying ammunition. It happens sometimes.

Or if you were aiming low enough, you might have put a HE shell right through the fuel bunker.

My question is this - does it really matter WHERE you hit on a ship? Did they actually model different parts of the ship doing different types of damage? Like is there a "Engine room" "Cargo Hold" "Fuel Hold" etc.. and can you actually specifically target them? For example if I encounter a lot of similar merchant ships I should be able to target the fuel area every single time and get great success saving on ammunition. It seems completely random to me.

I'm not sure, but I think they did.
On the other hand, if it's realistic your fuel bunker idea shouldn't work. Marine fuel oil can burn after it leaks out of the ship, but it will almost never explode. Kind of like the part where they have to put dynamite under auto fuel tanks to get them to explode for movies.

well theres no fuel bunker, but maybe they hit a tank of compressed gas or something.
and yes they have damage models. however if they go so far as to make it that you shoot one exact spot and its finished i dont think so. they definetely have damage models for bulkheads. if you didnt know or havent seen titanic, bulkheads keep the water contained in an area. if you manage to HIT a bulkheads or ht multiple torpedoes in different areas she gonna sink. its different for every ship, but basically pretty much every merchant ship will eventually go down with two torpedoes (but some that wont), however theres PLENTY of merchants who will not go down with 1. and instead of wasting TWO on her, we surface and fire the deckgun. now the deckgun can be used with great accuracy. usually the best spots to hit are the bow, bridge, and stern. and maybe the waterline for flooding damage. and frankly, i dont think ubisoft went as far as to make different cargo on each ship, and have it be a different result with the deckgun, but definetely models are there so that if you hit a certain thing a certain result will happen. and i know at least one thing, that if you aim for their radio room they cant radio you in. it even says so on the loading screen, so theres definetely damage models.
