If I were to recommend game now it would be ArmA 2 Operation Arrowhead and while at it ArmA 2 itself.
It's not just a first person shooter it's probably the most realistic as the gaming industry and community allow. And there's the real time strategy element in it. Base building units buying and commanding. It's modern though.
