Unless,of course, you count the release of the FlyBoys Flight Sim...on the shelf new for $9.99 ..and that one would even embarrass SH5...
First Eagles, CFS3 Over Flanders field, Rise of flight, there have been other WW1 sims after Red Baron II.

I play a heavily modded First Eagles, and I prefer it over RBII.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the enthusiast-developed "Over Flanders Field" or the study sim "Rise of Flight"? Both of those are more than worthy sucessors to Red Baron.

Yes, it took years for them to come, but the wait has been well worth it for this ex-Red Baron pilot.

Food for thought. And hope.

Exactly! I have "Over Flanders Field" and it's pretty good. The graphics are a bit dated, but it supports TrackIR (or rather, the underlying MS Combat Flightsim supports it), which makes it light years ahead of the Red Baron gaming experience, as much as I loved Red Baron. I thought helicopter combat sims were dead and buried too, and then DCS Black Shark came along recently.

Subsims are probably a little easier to program than flight sims. Fewer variables, enemy AI moving in two dimensions instead of three, and at much lower relative speeds. Water effects aren't that difficult with modern 3D environmental suites. Someone else will do it. But it will take a few years for SH5 to finally fade from the scene, and leave a gap in the market.

Can you say 'Class action?'
Sure you can!

the problem is that you have absolutely no basis for a lawsuit since Ubi was very carefull to only imply you could be assured of server access and never guarranteed it would continue in the future

its that age old trick the legal dept uses when they say they "may" or "might" do or provide something instead of "can" or "will"

the legal mumbo jumbo "implies" everything but promises nothing so if your game is a coaster tomorrow they are free and clear and you have no legal recourse because of it.

as for pirates, well we all know that path is already there for those who wish to enguage in that activity

Any way you want to cut it, Ubi has the ball and is calling the next play. The score is Ubi 0, Failure 72. There are only two minutes left in the game but the next play is still Ubi's.

I look forward to the day when we can all sing "Turn out the lights, the party's over!" They are a large company with huge assets, but I have great faith in their ability to "screw the pooch" to put it in fighter jock vernacular. Wonder how they will blow this last play?

Certainly they have taken themselves out of any consideration for any non-kiddie popcorn games they might wish to publish in the future. They've become a competitor of Pop Cap games.

I don't think so. I bet if Ubi would publish the sales figures, SHV probably drowned worse than SHIV. Wouldn't be a big surprise given an incompletely, poorly designed, flawed product with a unacceptable DRM scheme. So I would rather say that SHV didn't even plug the gap, but if at all then it is still SHIII (+GWX or other supermods) and SHIV (+TM etc) that would be a direct competition to a new game. I wouldn't worry about SHV at this point...
