The book was much better, which led me to get the dvd.

Run Silent Run Deep (1958) was Clark Gable's 63rd movie*. His last movie was The Misfits (1961) and was Clark Gable's 67th movie, so it was pretty close to the end of his life.

*Not counting Short Subjects.

I agree that the book was better, but also quite different from the movie.
