Hollywood makes matters worse by occasionally opening up the history books and they think to themselves, "you know what? We could make this look even better!"
They then make their film and make a complete hash of it. There are notable exceptions of course (Band of Brothers for 1*) but for the most part complete arse gravy historically.

* Yes I do know Band of Brothers was a TV series and not a film.
