And this : Neu said there were lightning resistors and grounding rods in place around the statue and amphitheater, but they failed to divert the bolt.

If I was gonna make a statue of Jesus, I would first get a bowl and put a sign on it that says, This is jesus, he saves, give him money! He will save you too!

Not to get to technical but there is no such thing as a 'lightning resistor' and they dont 'divert' bolts rather the system is supposed to provide a safe path to ground for a strike as opposed to the structural elements of a building.

One thing is certain about lightning protection systems if nature can find a fault in the system she will

I design LP systems as a professional so if you really want to know about them I'm the guy to ask.

ps; Did you know that lightning actually travels from the ground up to the cloud and not the other way around

If I'd built a gigantic Jesus, I would have made a full figure concrete statue with rockets in the feet. Scare the hell out of those aliens for sure when they find him floating around in the depths of space with his huge arms outstretched.
