I wonder why other nations are so obsessed with comparing German football players with tanks, and making "ironic" references to WWII. Two days ago a german article quoted a dozen or more headlines and key quotes from newspapers around the world, and from Asia to South America time an again some clever author considered it a great idea to write something like "German tanks shot Australia to pieces", "German tanks irresistable", "How to stop a German tank?" etc.

Im just waiting for the headlines in the British press if England should meet Germany in the tournament. Maybe in that case FIFA should keep the ball and hand out old ammunitions from the museums. While constantly reminding of the "Wembley goal" can be understood 8at leats that is part of football), I wonder what tanks and WWII have to do with modern sports.

The americans raced through the desert in '91 at least with the same pace if not faster than Rommel did in north Africa or Guderian in France. But nobody would think of writing about the American footballers "US tanks flattened the XYZ team".

That'd suit us, probably the only way we'd be guaranteed a win

On a more serious note....I do agree with the general points you are making

The press/media are only interested in selling whatever media they use to transmit they're rhetoric.

Jezz Sky, where is your sense of humor. Does it really matter. Its all good fun. That vid is great. I love how the tank steams over the player for the ball... Had me laughing my ass off..

I always wondered why they chase that round thing around and then, just when they've got it, they kick it away from them.

For fear of being trampled on...they don't wear those protective helmets or all that padded clothing you know

Oh, you mean you've forgotten the last time we met? The English tabloids love it, 'Our boys' against 'The Hun' and all that.
I don't know what it is with them, but with me it's genuine respect for the German fighting ability and tank construction ability. I mean...you think Tanks, you think Panzers, you think Germany. Germany virtually perfected the tank. They still make bloody powerful kit.
Besides Sky, did the Americans really face the same level of resistance in Iraq than Guderian and Rommel met in France and Africa, the same level of technology? The US used superior firepower, Germany used superior tactics. IMHO anyway, but besides, this is derailing the thread.
Feel free to make any stereotypes about the English team, chances are us English have already made them.

I wonder if the NK 'Glorious Leader' will be able to prevent the Brazilian 'Samba Kings' from giving his football team a footballing lesson tonight.

Brazil v North Korea (kick off in 15 minutes).

How long have you being watching football matches SkyBird ?
The Germans have a very methodical gameplay. Brasilians are eccentric on the playing field, Germans are realistic. Their gameplay is like a steamroller.
The oldest world cup I can remember was the 1978 in argentina, and I've always heard the german team being speaked of as tanks etc... There is no malice in that, unless you're easily insulted by non political correctness.

They are playing the right tactics. Negate space to the brasilians. Brasilians like to play a very calm, earthbound football. Passing the ball around, moving their whole team little by little on the attack. NK are just closing all the space except for the wings. And this makes the brasilian strategy more difficult to carry out.
It will be a very interesting game, I'd say a 0-0 or maybe a 1-0 for NK. Lol miracles can happen.
