I'd say the story in a shooter is almost as important as it is in other genres.

Have to say I don't know if I have any interest in this game. I liked Crysis right up till the aliens showed up (though I didn't like the NK nano suits as even though they were cheap copies, they performed WAY better then mine did), then I hated the rest of it. Pretty much like my reaction to Far Cry.

Yea, what is it with Crytek and aliens... Crysis would have been GREAT if it was only human enemy (IMO) Maby they have a secret weapon under development, you find out what it is, and it is unleashed on the world. And in Crysis 2 you had to defend somewhere they were attacking and then drive it to them and take there home land. or something.

If there's only aliens to fight, then I don't know how interested I am...

They took the worst part of the first one and made it into a new game. Clever.

Not only aliens, some of the earlier trailers actually focused on human oponents. Not defending, just saying.

It's arguable, yes. But Doom and Quake weren't popular for their story. This whole "shooter with a story" thing is fairly recent. I don't think a good story forms the core or is critical for a shooter.

*Some Spoilers ahead*
Well it might not be essential but I simply don't like it if there are scenes that simply don't make sense (For example when you have to "rescue" the scientist in that village. You don't have to use any stealth. You can blow up things outside and kill the entire garrison and when you get into the building the NK officer is still interrogating the person as if the world around them wouldn't exist. Or right at the beginning when you have to shut down a jammer. It is enough to simply switch it off. Well, the next soldier coming by could just switch it on again...etc. ).

And last but not least it all became much to predictable (Especially during the dialogues. Did anyone not expect things to go wrong when the NKs opened the sealed doors? Did anyone not predict that the nuke would strengthen the aliens [hey, we've all seen Independence Day, haven't we?]). Those stereotypes were annoying as well. The scientist who warns them all but they won't listen because they are too power hungry. The military thick head who doesn't listen to reason etc. We have all seen all that before in a dozen other games and movies.
There were some other illogical things there as well.
If the game had stopped at the entrance of the caves I would have called Crysis a decent (tactical) shooter. But from the entrance of the cave onwards they blew it.
