Luck obviously played a part in preventing something far more serious happening but the biggest part was obviously his flying skills

I've been watching these air races for a while now and from my observations its only a matter of time before one of em packs it in or worse crahes into a crowd. But I guess thats why pepole watch.
This one appears to be legit, there was a one making the rounds claiming the pilot was flying around with one wing sheared off. Turned out to be an RC plan.

I am very surprised that he could continue to fly with that sudden appearance of a large pile of crap that must have filled his cockpit.

I think this pilot just earned the "lowest altitude record" for such a race.

Luck had little to do with it. Skill and Training. Just like that Harrier Pilot in other vid.

Aye, it shows what standard those air race pilots are at

It WAS an RC plane, but when the aircraft goes vertical, the RC plane is edited out and replaced with a CGI aircraft

Im sure some CGI editing was done but keep in mind the insane power to weight ratio the RC planes have. I have seen them take off literally straight up out of some guys hand. Hanging from the prop like a helicopter.

I'm willing to bet a lot of CGI editing was the culprit. here is the evidence
First we notice the :17 mark in the video where the right wing separates from the aircraft. The wing breaks down and away from the aircraft. A loaded aircraft wing under stress almost universally breaks UP and away from the aircraft ( see at the 15 second mark) however this wing separation occurred at a relatively low wing loading maneuver. Take a look at the :23 mark... the airplane has lost its right wing; in this type of aircraft (as with most types of aircraft) this loss of the right wing would result in an uncontrollable roll to the right regardless of pilot inputs. from the :23 mark the airplane does about 3 full rolls to the LEFT which is the complete opposite of what physics dictate the aircraft should have done. further evidence that this is CGI, and couldnt possibly be a real -or- RC airplane is suggested at the :46 second mark... the attitude that the aircraft has at that point would require full left rudder, however the aircraft depicted has no rudder deflection at all. see here for further hoax explanations as to this particular video... the airplanes paint scheme mysteriously changes half way into the video as well ![]()

True Jim. Luck only favors the prepared. He was obviously prepared and well skilled pilot to recognize his dilemma in a split second saving the other half of that second to correct the problem.
