So Sailor Steve is right - if all you got to see is the bow wave and the wake in order to find your target then your on the way to playing a reasonable good portrayal of life at sea at night.

I seem to remember looking off the aft end of the ship at night in the med in total darkness and seeing the phosphorescence glow from the screws turning up the water. It was visible for a good 1-1.5 miles. You could see it plain as day. The carrier made an even brighter trail.
