Default Funniest thing I've seen yet!

I started a new career (after completing many by now).

In a type V!!B, November 1939, our second patrol, so still a pretty green crew. Off Ireland, we get a convoy report, close and intercept, at night.

So here we are, submerged - I'm working the sonar since I have no qual'd operators yet. Next thing, I go to the periscope, and there's a corvette, passing mere meters down our stbd side.

Down 'scope, momentary panic (having just survived the end of the war in U105 last weekend), pause, wait.

Now, up 'scope, and there she is, directly astern at 290 yards and going away. So, can't let that slip by - line up the stern tube (pretty simple solution, given the situation), and let fly.

The torp (type I, contact), actually hits her rudder, bounces back a bit, but then surges forward (it's still under full steam at max speed), and BOOM, blows her stern off! I was so surprized watching it, that I forgot to snap a pic - can't image the crews momentary thoughts - CLANG, what the hey??, then BOOM.

Never seen anything like that - if the angle astern hadn't been 0, I'm sure the torp would have veered off after the initial impact. Instead it just hung there a fraction of a second, then plunged ahead and hit the hull.

Now off to sink a T2 and a C2 or two - I'll take bizarre and lucky any day :rotfl:

I have had that happen before. It is funny though.

I had a similar incident happen a few minutes ago while playing the game. It was hilarious. Since it happened so fast, I tried to get a screenshot by pausing the game with the - numpad button. Instead I pressed the + numpad button and missed my opportunity. I know I could have used the Backspace button but I didn't think of it.

Anywho, here's the story...

I was up near Scapa Flow to the north in that active channel. A C2 appeared. I thought I would get rid of some stern torpedoes, so I fired. I tried to hit the middle of the ship, but hit forward of that. I sailed on. I quickly turned around. By the time I got turned around I couldn't use impact pistols. The angle was too great. So I ordered ahead flank and got behind the ship. I was detected. I planned to use magnetic pistols. I was about 350 meters away when I launched the fish. I guess the ship dived with the waves just enough for my torpedo to hit the rudder and prop. This time I heard a higher pitched, louder clang than normal. My torpedo started going backwards about instantly the same speed it was going forwards! It also jumped out of the water about a Type VII's conning tower height. It dropped back in the water and popped out again. By the time it started heading towards the ship again, my fish was practically returned to me! I was afraid it would sink me instead! The torpedo started heading for the ship again. This time the torpedo detonated under the propellor destroying it. This brought the ship to a hault. I was able to finish the C2 off with my last stern torpedo.

One thing that surprised me was when the torpedo dropped back in the water it made a sound like a depth charge being dropped. I wouldn't think there would be a need for that sound for a torpedo coming from a submarine. This makes me wonder if the devs had the game set up for air dropped torpedoes or ship launched torpedoes.

I had something similar happen.

The torp was fired a rearish angle.

It got caught up in the propeller and the house of the rudder, turned all everywhich way then exploded. The propeller must have sliced it up. Blew the ass off the ship.

I recall the time I came across a smallish convoy with 1 C2 and a hand ful of coastal merchants. I decided that the C2 was the only worth while target so I fired a TIII at around 2000m into the convoy set for 0.5m under the keel amidships. Nothing spectacular right ! Wrong, my aim was off ever so slightly and the torp ended up being a stern shot rather than amidships, the C2 comes down with the swell, the torp hits the prop and gets flicked AIRBOURNE to only land on a Coastal's deck behind the C2 and sinks it !!!

I just sat there laughing so hard :rotfl: that the C2 nearly got away !

Sounds like those props can be dangerous weapons. :rotfl:

I took a shot at a C3, and it exploded, crippling one of her props. They used rudder to compensate and kept steaming ahead. I got directly behind her and let one loose, running impact only and shallow. It hit the rudder perfectly and glanced right off, but the angle of the rudder put the fish in a circle pattern. It turned back INTO the ship, hitting her at ~90AOB amidships and brought her down. I just sat there in disbelief.

Yah, the 'Torpedo vs Rudder' situation is funny as hell. *CLUNK!*
