[QUOTE=tomoose;1395399]Cptroyce;
yes, fuel is something you definitely have to keep an eye on. If you run out of fuel there is no option for a tow or rescue.
For what it's worth my standard rule is once I reach the 50% fuel mark during a mission then I have to start thinking about;....

Tomoose - thanks for that info..Since I'm new, I didn't give fuel a second thought until I received the low fuel icon warning. Now I'll need to refrain from sailing around at "Full" and wasting resources wandering around the Celebes Sea.

However when one is out of Freemantle and on patrol around the Philippines there is alot of sea to traverse...just to get to your patrol point. Most fuel is used, just getting "on station". How do you more experienced SH'ers handle this type of mission??

..but fortunately you do have the "range at current speed" calculation button which helps a lot.
Uhh..where is that? (hides head asking)

Uh, that was what I was trying to explain. You'll need to go 1/3 to 2/3 pretty well the whole time until you get a contact to chase. That would mean the whole way t the Philippines from Freemantle, and on the way back too. That's one of the reasons I started looking for a mod. Now I can run at standard the majority of the time and even sprint to Midway on full speed sometimes (If I still have lots of fuel after a quick patrol), then refuel and sprint to Pearl Harbor.

1/2 speed 1/4 at 33% of fuel you might make it make sure your battery is charge and click off the charge button

Do your traveling at ~ 9 kts. On the surface.

Submerge to attack or survive. Moving submerged is fuel intensive. Avoid it when possible.

If you've sustained any form of damage, follow closely the recharghing of your batteries. It is possible that they wont recharge 100%. In such a case stop auto recharging. Recharhing batteries costs diesel.

Yes most of your fuel will be spent to reach your mission objective and return to base. If you allocate 10-20% of your fuel for reserve/contingency purposes you'll find that the actual availability of fuel for combat/patrol purposes maybe lower than 20%. Not unrealistic mind you. Fleet boats would routinely travel 30-40 days to and back from their patrol stations where they remained for less than a week. The Pacific is a BIG pond!

As the war progresses and more "forward" bases are established fuel becomes a lesser concern but always remember nobody if going to tug you home if you run dry!

Default "range at current speed"

Cptroyce;
I forget which row of buttons it's in but look for the icon which shows a stopwatch symbol and a <----> symbol which is "time to end of course" next to it is the "range at current speed" button (and for the life of me I can't remember what the graphic is, LOL).

This is in TMO BTW I can't remember if it was available in stock.

you should be able to make it back to australia on one-third speed from PI on 33% fuel.

Thanks gents for all that info..

>> you should be able to make it back to australia on one-third speed from PI on 33% fuel. <<

Actually, that's right...I ran out of fuel just about 50-60 nm out from Freemantle. However, on the return try to Australia, I submerged from a contact around Indonesia, and then started for port again...except I forgot to surface and ran for some distance at P depth..burning up unnecessary reserves. Had I not made that "bonehead" move, I would have made it back to port on the 33% remaining fuel.

Love this sim btw..lots of depth to it..no pun intended.

Default Use your batteries to get home

I have been in your situation. What you need to do is run submerged until the batteries are 40-50% and then surface only long enough to recharge. You do that charge at 2/3 speed to conserve fuel.

It is slow, but all the while using batteries is extending your range.

When you are free of likely enemy encounters, you can run the batteries down to 10-20% before refuelling. Also, slow speed underwater to extend battery life.

It is slow but survival is the goal.

That might work in the sim but it aught not. The diesel engines is what charges the batteries. This should only use more fuel if anything. I don't know if SH4 simulates this properly though.
