Default So many questions

Im quite new to subsims, in fact i bought my first one a few weeks ago (shV) but discovered i couldnt run it very well, so ive grabbed me a cheap copy of sh3 instead as it was recommended by a friend over either of the newer games.

Im a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of mods available for this game and have a few questions for you guys-
  • How can i move into other areas of the boat, like the engines/torpedo rooms and so on, i really want to go exploring! I managed to find shift+f2 to noclip around but everything is black if i go through the hatches! what am i doing wrong?
  • Ive been looking at GWX:3.0 gold, ive spent most of my morning reading the manual and im a little concerned its going to be too "hardcore" for me. I havent really turned on many of the realism options yet as im still learning the basics. Is it advisable to install gwx for a first timer or should i stick with the unmodded game until i know what im doing??
  • Are there any graphics mods like realtime shadows, better crew models, better clouds etc, i really liked the look of shV even though it only ran at 10fps!
Is there anything else that would be concidered essential that im missing, ive heard good things about sh3 commander.

I expect there will be more questions as i get more into the game!

Thanks guys!

Welcome aboard!

I'll hit your questions one by one:

-Unfortunately the torpedo and engine rooms aren't modeled so you are doing nothing wrong. Check out Flakmonkeys FM NewInteriors V1.0 in the stickied threads in this forum for a little help there. But don't install that one just yet...Get QWX in there first.

-GWX isn't too hardcore, it can be, but in a good way. I'd highly recommend this as your first mod. It adds A LOT and makes the game so much more than stock. It also ties into your last question...

-Graphics mods: There are a lot of these and GWX incorporates a lot of graphical improvements right into the mod. Enhanced damage effects is a part of GWX that you can enable that adds a lot. This is the second reason I'd recommend GWX for.

Lastly, I just can't say enough about GWX. Ask away with any questions and I'll bop in later and field 'em as best I can!

i recommend you dabble around for a few patrols, and learn the interface of SHIII, its mnain commands, and learn to sink ships regularly.
then get GWX 3 gold... and discover how much it added.

The manual for GWX is fantastic - but nothing is *hardcore* in the sense that you are forced to do something.

But it ADDS so much to the original game... phew!
Pure enjoyment, very relaxing.

Just keep in mind that SH3+GWX3.0+mods IS NOT an eye candy arcade game like the stock SH5. Only if you are looking for a great, as close as possible to real thing, U-boat SIM you are to enjoy this game.

And yes, SH3 COMMANDER is a must have immersive tool.

Ahoy!

And in the end don't forget SH3 Commander for the ultimate career experience. You won't believe the feeling it gives you when added to the mods mentioned.

Steve has a good point there, SH3 Commander is really the icing on the GWX cake!

Thanks folks, ive installed sh3 commander, havent started a career with it yet though.
I think i`ll wait a while before i install gwx3 so i can get used to the basics of the game.

One more question: Ive been looking through the game manual and have seen that there are radio orders to request resupply and request an escort to port, i cant seem to find them in the game though??

Radio orders are simply there to add to the immersion.

But man..would that make a sweet mod! Wasn't there a call for air support feature in a mod? I seem to have a hazy recollection of that..maybe
