Tramp steamers.
am I doing something wrong? but even two torpedoes wouldn't down a tramp steamer for me last night...perhaps I ought to experiment with manual aiming and have my officer do my shooting for me....??? FOUR Sunk a medium cargo...all of these in the practice missions ![]() |

Maybe you need to give it little more time? After a torpedo-impact (if the ship isn't immediately destroyed by a hit in the fuel bunkers) it can take a few minutes or even hours for the ship to fill with water and eventually sink.
Most of the time, 2-3 torpedoes are all you need to sink the early big cargo's, so don't waste more than 2 on a medium cargo. There's a thread somewhere discussing the weak points of military and merchant ships. There's also a pdf-file displaying those weak points. I'll try to find the link.

I agree, the smallest ships seem the hardest to sink.
Those little tramp steamers are tough little bastards! Granvilles will sink with one torp, but those little tramp steamers are tough! Steve |

A good ol' pounding with the deck gun could show them

By practice missions you mean the torpedo school mission in the naval academy?
Being a newb I dunno if there's a consensus with ecperienced players or not, but personally I have found that the ships in those naval academy missions seem to take alot more damage before sinking than those you encounter in the actual war, playing a career. ![]() |

Are you using manual aiming? I use that convoy training level to test new mods and I find the ships are the same as they are in the campaign.
Just afew hours ago I hit a medium cargo (C2 in stock) and obliterated it with one lucky shot, but in that same mission I hit a Hunt 1 and it survived which i've never seen before. If depends greatly on the location you hit and the depth you ran the torpedo at. If you have Dud torpedoes disabled you should be going for keel shots as the game won't make them as bad as they really were, but if your using impacts try adjusting depths and going for vital areas. |

since youll be using impact far more than magnetic, simply because of the weather, i recommend you learn to set the depth based on the waterline and keel depth of the target ship. Lets set a cargo has a depth of 7 meters, and its bottom curves at 5 meters. you will want to set the torp depth to 4.5 to get the best chance of detonation with a good impact angle, and to compensate for the boat swinging up and down in the waves.
thats at least how i do it, and i can often sink 6 to 10k ton ships with a single torp. it may take an hour but it works. |

The little ones can be the trickiest but they are no different to any other ships in game regarding 'sweet spots'.
If possible, use the deck gun to finish them off if they don't sink with one eel. You may come across the odd one carrying a cargo of lifejackets ![]() |

Lifejackets, or comically-shaped helium balloons destined for Britain to boost morale during the Blitz, perhaps.
I did wonder whether the training mission ships contained no cargo as they were destined for the bottom anyway, and hence were unusually bouyant. Even if that's not at all the case I'm sticking to that reason to defend my naval academy performance ![]() |
