A long while back, I read a book called The Good Shepard. It chronicles a destroyer captain in WWII escorting a convoy across the Atlantic. I am fairly certain it was a "True fiction" book, written as a fiction but a true story nonetheless.

In it a U-boat surfaces after breaking contact at the head of a convoy row and begins opening up with the 88, moving the opposite direction that the convoy was.

I recall the book called the u-boat captain "either incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid"
