How things are going the temp jobs are the are the rule for now..
Good options are going back to school or joining police/military.

I'm in employment, but only just and not on many hours.
Not much in the way of jobs around here that don't:
1) Require own transport
2) Require x amount of years relevant experience
3) Require a degree in relevant subject

Default Retired by circumstance

Does retired count? I got downsized along with just about the entire high-tech industry in this area back in 2002.

That was my third downsizing since 1996.

Since my skill set was non-internet, no positions were available. I am over-qualified for regular jobs.

After 3 years, aged 55, I realized that I'd been put out to pasture.

Lesson to you younger folk: Plan for your next job. Don't think the present one will last!

Same here Oberon, I work part time which is only about 20-30 hours a week for just above minimum wage.

Underemployment is just as big a problem as Unemployment IMHO.

Next year I plan on going back to school.

I am sort of, lost my job last December due to cut backs, join some agency's get a bit of work here and there but not bringing the money I need. Some of the job websites I am registered with show you the number of candidates applied to jobs, for example near me a part time warehouse job and over 800 people have applied to it in the first three days!

Being in my 40's now your looked at as dead meat, spent, ran your course, thanks a bunch.

And if Labour win the general election they are too focus on the under 18 year olds, what about the rest of us who need help?

I've been unemployed since last June. I've got to say it's getting slightly better though. Before when I submitted my resume or application the silence was deafening, now I'm at least being told they don't want me.

And being over 40, there's not much left here. Maybe found a store and sell something ?
