Default Game Launcher hangs

I apologize if this was asked elsewhere, but I couldn't find it. I had the problem with the game launcher not seeing my internet connection, but I got past that hurdle by adding my proxy settings in the settings.ini.

But then, while that error message went away, my game launcher just stalls out. I see the little Silent Hunter 5 picture with the spinning white circle, and it spins . . . and spins . . . and spins some more . . . and that's all that happens.

It doesn't connect, it doesn't stop spinning, I don't know what it's doing but I know what it isn't doing: launching the game. Does anyone know of a cause and/or a fix or workaround?

Well, I figured out part of my problem, and maybe problems for others too. If anyone is using Proxomitron to block gif animations, pop-ups, banners, and all that other assorted stuff, that's what was causing my problems. Proxomitron uses a proxy setting to route all net traffic through it so it can filter out all the above mentioned stuff. Simply adding the proxy info to the settings.ini got rid of the error message, but still doesn't allow the launcher to launch.

I put my settings.ini back to original and went into my LAN settings in MSIE and got rid of the routing to the proxy and it connected like a charm.

Problem is, I like Proxomitron and don't want to stop using it, nor do I want to have to modify my MSIE every time I want to play SH5. So does anyone know what website (either URL or IP Address) that the launcher needs to access in order to connect? I thought I saw static3.cdn.ubi.com listed but adding that to my Proxomitron block file didn't do the trick. Does anyone else playing SH5 use Proxomitron and if so, have you worked around the problem yet?

Never heard of that program, sorry. Can you just add something like *.ubi.com to it?

Okay, now I'm totally confused. To troubleshoot I had turned off my antivirus, disabled Proxomitron, disconnected MSIE from the proxy that points to Proxomitron, and so forth. Was able to log in. So one by one I put all those settings back until only Proxomitron remained. I assumed that had been my problem.

Then for the heck of it, I re-enabled it. And I'm still able to log on! So while I'm relieved because my problem seems to have resolved itself (somehow) I'm very uncomfortable as to how it happened. My settings are now just like they were when I couldn't connect, but now I can connect.

I'm really confused. Sorry for starting a thread hoping to fix my problem when now it seems like the problem's disappeared entirely on its own without any help from me.

It could have been many thing that caused your problems.... bad connection, server down, slow internet etc. or just plain old LAG!!!

So i wouldn't worry about what caused it.... unless it happens again.

What kind of internet speed and stability do you have? If the Ubi servers have been down, I guess you could have experienced the sort of problems you have described.

I have cable with about 15 MBps download and over 2 MBps upload. It's never been a real problem before. And I was able to get online and log in at the Ubi website while it was giving me grief. But for right now I'm going to follow jwilliams' advice and just be thankful I can play the game now. No use expending energy worrying about a problem that hopefully won't come back.
