Default McAffee wacks thousands of PC's

Mcaffee pushed a virus profile update with a false positive in it which deletes a vital system file SVCHOST.EXE effectivly crippling thousands of PC's.

This effects Windows XP service pack 3 machines.

I have been personally affected by this 'glitch' and am still trying to recover from it. I have a thread in the computer issue section going if you want to check in.

Then again if you were affected by this chances are you wont be reading this today.

hehe, I can proof you otherwise.

I recently swapped to Avast Internet Security
first ran the unninstall throught windows Add/Remove programs to get rid of Norton Internet Security and ran the removal tool afterwards to get rid of the last tracks and it worked like a charm

I dont think you understand the extent of the problem.

You cannot even copy paste without using a command prompt.

You cannot get to safe mode.

No services whatsoever can be started.

The file svchost.exe which is the service host file for xp was deleted therefore no services can be started.

So yea the removal tool will not execute, trust me I tried.

Wait...now I'm confused

I just responded and talked about the NORTON removal tool itself

not about the issue you have with the Mccafee.

No its me that is confused I just took it you were talking about the Mcaffee removal applet. Sorry about that.

On an interesting note I recently switched from Norton to Mcaffee and was pleasently supprised that a simple add/remove program effectively removed Norton. Now Mcaffee has effectivelly removed my computer.
