Kitchen you say? Spectacular... on deck watch and want a quick snack? Knock twice on the hatch and you get a +5 to morale.

yes, when you are in the kithcen look up and you will see the hatch, I believe this is some kind of emergency hatch, and it would be used for refitting the boat with food etc..

I remember the hatch in the kitchen on the USS Silversides also.. it's mostly for supply I think. But you are right.. might be an escape hatch too? Not sure how that works.

Actually they used the torpedo tubes as an emergency hatch. I remember seeing that in a documentary about u-boats where the only man who managed to survive got out from a torpedo tube

I think with the boat sinking... anything that leads to open water is an escape hatch.

As for the other hatches on the boat, they werent used for entrances/exits. Just the conning tower.

These hatches are for ammunition storage, not escape or entry. Though the rear one could be used to escape, and the boat would have to be flooded if submerged to get the hatch open otherwise outside water pressure would prevent that.

You'll note that from inside, the rear hatch covers a well that should have a plate sealed to it's bottom but is on our model open with no cover plate in place. This being located in the galley.
The forward storage well isn't visible from inside. (At least I haven't found any.)
