There were two Sharks, SS-174 and SS-314. Both were lost in WWII.
SS-174 was NAZB
SS-314 was NZFO

Thank you, Forgot about SS-314. I was referring to SS-174.

For some reason, I thought you were referring to the first one...
Not sure where I got that idea from, though.

Also, does anyone know what station at Pearl Harbor the boats would be communicating with? I've come across references to a "NPM" and a "NPY" radio station.

NPM was Pearl Harbor. I think (but am far from certain) that NPY did not come into service until after the war. In every first-person narrative by submariners I've come across they mention guarding the NPM frequency and I've never read anything about NPY. Here are a few others used by subs during the war:

NPG = San Francisco
NPN = Guam
NPO = Cavite
NPR = Dutch Harbor
NKN = NAVGROUP China
VHM = Brisbane
VHF = Fremantle

Not sure if you've found this site before but it is fascinating and detailed reading about submarine communications procedures and the Fox schedules:

Thanks for the information. I hadn't run across that site. Bookmarked for detailed reading later.
