He is away for 14 days and doesn't get in touch even once? I guess I could buy the fear of roaming charges, but we have Internet cafés in Europe you know.

I even heard that some people in Europe own things called "telephones" through which one can talk to people over incredible distances. They even say that those "telephones" have occasionally been seen outside of private property for everyone to use (for a small fee that is...) But I don't believe that, it's just a conspiracy. Global communications is a myth!
