Wrong name, but a workable system.

90 degree shot means, the TORPEDO makes a 90 degree turn.
What you are referring to is a simple bow shot, with a 90 degree AOB.
(It's still a bow shot.)

Your system uses a very simple, old, and valid navigational rule:
Constant Bearing + Decreasing Range = Colision is imminent.
