At least according to a great book I have on the Type VII's called "Anatomy of the Ship, The Type VII Uboat" by David Westwood published by the Naval Institute Press.

Bow detail, note item 33 which is the jack staff.

Im going to do some more digging in this book but from what I see so far they modeled the boats in SH5 very accuately.
But as far as the towers go, it depends on what year they were built. The Type VIIC's in 1939 & 40 had essentially the same tower as the B did.
The Viic,s in 1939 & 1940 had essenially the same tower as the B model?
Epic fail! See for yourself.

VIIB

VIIC

Huge difference not?

Yes, I'm not sure how they got this so blatantly wrong, especially with all the information to hand. I don't suppose it's easily fixed either?

oscar, please read this, it makes some sence:

The first can be seen when you select the Narvik mission and VII B, you will get an early tower like Prien's U47 at the time of Scapa Flow and perhaps until july 40.
If you select the Bismark mission you will get a late tower.
What is not known is if the second or intermediary tower (like silent hunter 3) or cut tower is there. For this we have to wait for the patch and see if we can have this cut tower during improvements.
The photos showing some of the last pictures of U-47 in february 41 show this new "cut" tower.
As i said above, the Narvik mission shows a correct tower with a small basket or bath behind like A but has wind deflector in the middle of the tower.
I hope to have this early type B soon with the patch.
The images others and myself have posted in the thread you're linking above may not be so accurate.

If you carefully study the pictures you will see the most obvious hull difference between VIIB and VIIC - wider bow on the VIIC. And some pictures that show net cutters and other stuff we discussed are now in question after you further examine them.

Someone also claimed that U-47 was type A, which we know isn't, and it was well documented.

What I am interested - is it true that VIIB boats had 3 basic types of towers or was it specific to each boat based on the time they have been commissioned / built?

Well all the hair splitting is IMO a bit fruitless. It all depends on the year of manufacture, and even the area of operation and at the end of the day there were so many variants throughout the war how could anyone really do them all justice?
And those two pics, one a real boat and of what year and location isn't known or stated and is obviously a very early boat given that the engine intake channel is on the exterior of the tower, the other a plastic model which looks to be the Revell and is of a much later year.
So no real poof of anything there.

And at the end of the day, who really cares? Is its that imperitive?

The Devs did a fine job as far as im concerned, and I dont care to sit and split hairs over it. So have at it.

"It all depends on the year of manufacture"
Yes exactly as well as manufacturers.
