How to create sub emblems?

From another thread, I found a U-556 emblem here:

I cropped it out of the other emblems. To get rid of the blue I changed the image to graysale. Once I start changing the background to black, I quickly lose where the emblem itself is. It is hard for me to pick out what needs to be further edited. Believe it or not, I think it was harder when the background was blue.

Would someone be willing to finish the emblem? I would GREATLY appreciate it.
