Default "Kill" music in GWX

Hi all,

Is there a way I can turn off the music that plays when I score a hit in GWX?

If you go into your game folder, into data/Sound/Music, you'll find a music.cfg file. Open it in Notepad, it should say ";GW MINIMAL MUSIC MIXER" at the top.

It's the file that controls what music tracks play at what points in the game. Find the one you want to change. IIRC the one you're looking for is at the bottom, [JOY]. In an unmodded GWX3 install it looks like this:

[JOY]
Tracks=1
Track1=Happy_Times_4.ogg
;Track1=empty.ogg
;Track2=Joy_2_Master.ogg
;Track3=Joy_3_Master.ogg

Change the line

Track1=Happy_Times_4.ogg

to

Track1=empty.ogg

I have done a little playing around with this file and I *think* this will cause the file Empty.ogg file to play when you get a hit, rather than the file that is playing now. If you click on that file (it's in the same folder) you'll find that it's just silence, which is what you want.

Prolly should wait for confirmation from more experienced tinkerer, lol. Also I've never made changes to this file except while in base between patrols so I don't know if it's safe to do it any other time.

AS above is correct.
To shut off all music, except for the gramophone and the introduction, uncheck music in options.

The first thing I did (the pre-patched game "Turn Music Off" didn't work) was to throw out the entire contents of the Music folder, except the master file.

I hate in-game background music.

I always play a little bit with the music on when I first get a game, if only because I usually forget to turn it off. And I do like to hear what it sounds like in-game. Besides if I'm just fiddling around with a new game it's not like I'm sitting there for hours hearing the same nonstop soundtrack in the background.

I did like the idea of the mod I had originally that subbed in music from Das Boot for everything, but once I started actually going out on missions (not to mention a career-mode control) it quickly became clear that "everything" was way too much of a good thing, lol.

I still use music from Das Boot but it's minimal. Background music for the main menu screens, and for [Victory] and [Defeat] states. I think music tied to [Victory] is what plays when a ship you attacked sinks and for that I've got "Inferno" from the DB soundtrack. For [Defeat] I've got "Erinnerung" playing over (what I call) the LOL UR ALL DEAD N00B screen. And "Das Boot (Single Version)" over the main menu screens.

I may rip an .ogg file from the soundtrack's version of "Muss I' Denn" and rename it to whatever that file is that plays when you leave base on patrol and have my sound mod sub it in. I've been playing it on the gramophone instead but it would be cool to have it coming from the "band" on the docks.

It took me forever to figure out how to get the gramophone to work, and it was due to having checked music off in the options. Not sure if this was specific to me, and it also might have been with sh4, but I just thought I'd toss it out there since I spent hours fiddling with codexes and such, when the fix was a checkbox.

I actually think this was the issue in sh4, not 3. Edit, nope, it was sh3, but I had the music VOLUME turned all the way down... rendered the gramophone useless.

Yeh, it's been driving me nuts. Brings me right out of the game.

Anyway, no more music for me!

I knew I had to get rid of the music on torpedo impact the last time I was in the middle of attacking a convoy. I was at the attack 'scope and completely engrossed in setting up shot on my second target plus trying to keep an eye/ear open for the escorts plus trying not to get run over by any merchants coming up on my flank... when all of a sudden the eels hit the first target I'd fired on and the music started. Didn't help that the track I'd picked out for that particular game "state" turned out to be one that worked much better in theory than in actual application.

My first thought was, "Verdammt noch mal, which one of you down there thought putting a record on right now would be a good idea?"

In retrospect, then, I can see why Pilgrim was so upset about being keelhauled for it.
