When rumors of Silent Hunter 5 started to surface in September of 2008, my initial reaction was "please let this be a 2011 release". Once the March 2010 release date was confirmed, so were my worst fears.

I've asked my wife to look at purchasing this game for me for Christmas, but only if it's under $20 and can be played offline.
For me thus far the bugs in the game are a larger issue then the DRM. I should mention that the computer I am using has a wireless adapter, so I am not even running off the computer that is directly connected to our high speed.

Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of the DRM, but it's the unfinished game that is more of an issue which both 3 and 4 were as well, but not to this extent.

Well ...

-I'm having a huge fun sinking tonnage with my uboat,
-I'm delighted with the superb graphics, detailed models, and amazing explosions and effects, as well as the realistic water
-I'm loving being able to play a hammered out game with most bugs and glitches solved
-I'm enjoy playing my game anytime, anywhere I want

Oh, did I forgot to say it?

I'm playing just SH3 and SH4 UBM

It really is sad, Kevin. A new Toyota is a better risk than Silent Hunter 5.

Well, maybe Ubi will see the light and fix the game. Like you I'm ready and willing to buy a DRM free game that fixes many of the glitches. My price point seems to be higher than yours, but I don't see that mattering as the first two requirements block any consideration of price...

I can't get over Ubi's attitude about the whole thing. This is how it is and if you don't like it too bad, don't buy it.

I smile and say okay!

Bet they blink first.

You're right about the price point. If the game was heavily patched and playable offline, I'd pay full price for it.

I'd've paid full price at release if it weren't for the DRM, and I'm not even sure my current computer would run it well enough for me to enjoy it w/o upgrades, which aren't going to happen for at least a couple years.

As it is, they may get $10 for it from me somewhere down the line, by which time it will probably have been fully patched and (I hope) the DRM removed, and my system beefed up a bit. That's how I got SH3, after all, but only because I didn't know it existed until six months ago, lol. Sometimes it pays to be out of the loop on these things (but in my case it's not paying very well for Ubi this time around).

I'd buy a DRM-free version for whatever the price was, even though I don't see myself playing it at all. I have to say, I'm fascinated by some of the campaign and AI modding possibilities, but I simply will not buy it if there is even a remote chance that I might ever be disallowed play (in my case modding) through any fault other than my own system, regardless of the duration of the problem.

If that chance is demonstrated to be impossible, I'd reconsider.

It is certainly strange and sad that so many stock sh3 and 4 bugs have propagated into this title as well.

Nah. They've maneuvered themselves into a position where they simply can't back down thanks to all their, "This is how we're going to end piracy FOREVER" BS.

It's a shame, because I'd pick it up just to support the sub sim genre if the DRM weren't attached, despite the fact that I hear it's pretty craptastic. Until the DRM goes, though, I won't touch it.

My feelings exactly. I returned the game and posted that I would buy it back when DRM was user friendly. After some further investigation I probably won't. I expect the modders will work wonders but I doubt Ubi will issue any more patches. This game is such an abortion they'll probably cut their losses and bailout. I also dare to criticize the devs who for all their hard work had a hand in this unfortunate mess!!! ( I know that is a very unpopular statement to make Neal but it's IMO )
