I think this is a fair assesment

From Metacritic

Eurogamer
"As a game, Silent Hunter 5 fails because the bugs and UI render it a chore. As a simulation, it fails because the bugs and UI render it ridiculous and incomplete. As a product, it's just overwhelming disrespectful to this long running series' fans. And finally, as one of the first games to receive Ubisoft's new copy protection, it's an embarrassment."

They gave it 50/100, I wouldn't even go that high personally.

Exactomundo! This game is getting KILLED by user REVIEWS at a 4.8 average rating here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/silen...ary;user-score

But these long dedicated Subsim fans here on the boards are keeping their heads in the SAND--WAKE UP PEOPLE--this game is a serious FAILURE.

"I have played the silent hunter games for many years and love the realism they have brought to controlling a WW2 submarine. I was really looking forward to this game and thought it would be a new and improved SH3 & 4, how disappointed I was."

I'm sad it wasn't an instant hit. I'm really pleased that I did not get it. Reading the posts in this forum (long before this thread) helped me make that decision, and from what I've read definitely saved me some cash and aggravation (thanks, Neal, for subsim.com!).

I keep tabs on the shv threads daily and I'm still hopeful that one day I'll be able to give it a try, if some of the show stopping kinks can be worked out.

I am beginning to agree with the OP. Just look this link to see at what an unplayable mess it really is...

I'm glad I didn't rush out and buy it also. I nearly did, but the DRM system is what stopped me.

The thing is, there is no incentive for me to go and purchase this game. If it was just a case of bugs and unfinishedness, then I would buy it to support the developers and the genre, and put up with it for a year or so until a compreshensive set of mods addressed all the problems. But I think I speak for many of us when I say:

Why would I want to support a dumbed down game with a DRM system that sucks?

By buying this game now I would be supporting that trend. I'm happy with SHIII and IV for now. If modders manage to do something with SH5 then it will be worth picking up from the bargain bin after the DRM mechanism has been removed. But that will be in a year or two, and by then only us serious simmers will be thinking about it.

Folks there is no problem taking this game back to whereever you bought it for a full refund. At least here in the UK, we have trade descriptions laws which basically states that if it doesn do what it says on the box, you get your money back within a 2 week period. That includes computer games.

Not usre about the US but i'd be surprised at any retailer not willing to refund once they are aware at the actual connection problems.

It says you must have an internet connection, which if you do, means you have met all the requirements as stipulated on the paclkaging and still UBIsoft have failed to provide you the service as advertised.

Anyways apparently this is now the most returned game at Play.com who are also instructed to accept all refund requests.

This is going to be a disaster for UBi. And well deserved.

This pretty much confirms that the DRM will be patched out.
Whoever thought this up should be fired.

intriguing comment.

ok, I'll bite, exactly what aspects of your SH5 game do you find dumbed down compared to SH3?

I own and have played SH3, SH4 and SH5. At 100% realism (i.e. no external views, no map updates, realistic sensors, limited fuel, dud torpedoes. etc.), I find SH5 stock is as challenging and realistic as SH3 or SH4 stock.

We are also discovering many under the hood improvements to the simulation aspects of SH5.

but then you don't own the game,... do you?

I agree. Many folks are confusing whats actually the prob with SH5.

I find this argument about it being dumbed down or "casualised" totally nonsensical. I really cannot see casual gamers getting into SH5, is far too fiddly and complex, even in its current buggy state.

If Ubisoft aimed this game at the casual market they have failed miserably as i reckon sales for SH5 will be far lower than SH4.

I think it's a fantastic game. I paid good money for a CE of SH4 on eBay 2 years ago and I would pay the same amount for this 2 years from now.
I really don't understand the hate it gets.
We all know there's bugs but surely most will get fixed by patches.
There isn't a game today that doesn't get released without bugs.
It's unfortunate but that's how the publishers play today.
