Wasn't the crowd hugely upset regarding missing harbor traffic in SH3? Had to be modded...

In reality, going into a busy harbor is a "challenge" even with a small boat, if not the most demanding task (After a day of fishing and drinking). So it makes perfect sense to stand on the bridge, using that TC button with caution. Even when rushing, it takes only 2-3 minutes, so what?

Verdammt, you wanna be KaLeun or not? You even went to college to get that rank, remember?

So, no bug for me, if I was a Tanker Capitan, I wouldn't stop for subs either...

Yes indeed that was one of my biggest gripes about SH3, no traffic. Yes I know there were mods relating to this, but I'v never been crazy about putting in mods, too many of them could mess things up and also conflict with one another.
And this time around I'll avoid mods until the patches come along and see if the devs can fix a lot of things. Im always afraid a mod will not be compatible with upcoming patches, and this game auto patches on startup, so no way to know until the game crashes if something doesn't jive. I mean hey with the game only being 6 days old I know there's no way anyone can be so sure a mod will be okay in the long run.
I hate crashes, and I hate reinstalls.

But yeah buddy it was nice to come into port with escorts cruising around, and ships coming and going. Had to keep a sharp lookout like a good skipper should.

I've never had a crash but I always keep my eye on my sub when going through ports and the Kiel Kanal. They should disable collisions with friendly/neutral ships when travelling in "Travel mode" at over 32x And fix the Deck Watch. They're useless at the moment. Try to keep Map Contacts ON until they do that and they fix the weird horizon line. You'll have a much better game time.

Figured out why I'm not getting the 'Ship Spotted' audio cue.
My captain is lying in his bunk during travel.
I can't HEAR the watchcrew from down there.
Have moved him up to the bridge and guess what?
"SHIP SPOTTED"
I can hear 'em just fine from up there.

Jeez, what a dumbass I am.

Had it happen to me three or four times so far, 2 times with map updates ON, 2 times with map updates OFF. Realistic sensors are ON always.

Was speeding along at 1024x or higher, when suddenly the game immediately went from map view to the "death cam" view.

I never use very high time compression, things can happen too quickly.

close to port, I stay on the bridge and use 4x to 16x TC ready to drop to 1x any time I see something unusual or potentially dangerous.

The ports and harbour traffic are nicely done. The only other thing we need would be navigation buoys to mark the ship channel and ships giving way to the right to maintain proper navigation rules in port.

Yes, when I am sailing into port I stay on the bridge for visual and max TC is 32x. With Map Contacts OFF, there are no icons for friendlies either, so being your own harbor pilot is a must. That's ok, I accept that, actually prefer it that way. I'm not talking about problems close to ports where there is known traffic. I mean in the middle of the North Sea, where it is possible I may sail 2 days without a contact, or meet a random encounter with a ship or convoy (that is the great part of a dynamic campaign)... there I use 1024x TC. And far too often, as Para described, I go from sailing along to CRASH!-- death cam. This is a real major issue, not an incidental bug I can play around. The game should always drop the player out of high TC before the encounter is so close it is instantly fatal.

That's my biggest concern, that the realism settings for Map Contacts and Realistic sensors could possibly be a part of this problem. I am not conducting a patrol with Map Contacts ON (I see real time icons ) and Realistic Sensors OFF.

Watch crew are noobs like me and can't function without map contacts on... they may even need the captain up top to stay properly motivated, number two is a slacker.

Yeah, you have a problem. I play 100% and in the open sea any chance encounter I'm dropped to X32. It does not matter if a friend or foe. I'm dropped out of TC to X32. Often I can not even see the vessel. I have to use the hydrophone to find it.

If you are in travel mode you will not be dropped out of high TC. Perhaps this is the problem? Have you ever checked back through your text log to see what was said by the crew?

Yes thats what I said in post #14, that if you have TC in "travel mode" it ingores friendlies, land mass, and shallow waters. It only drops out in the event that an enemy is detected.

I am having the same issue. I miss the days of the "SHIP SPOTTED!" popup message. I get nothing now. No TC drop, no warning from the watch, no nothing except being rammed or shelled by something.

Never....EVER EVER! use TC in heavy fog, even on the open sea. Of course its impossible to know when there is heavy fog since you cant get weather reports with vanilla.

I dunno how i pulled it off, but I found a ship in the open ocean to ram with TC on during heavy fog, i got no warning at all. None. I went from pressing the tc button up to 2052 or whatever..to dead screen...
