A friend of mine has SH5 and I was looking at it a little while ago. I will not give my opinion on it because I haven't played it.

However - I think I found an easter egg of sorts. Perhaps someone can confirm what I think I saw.

On a loading screen (I think he was loading initially) it gave him a transition screen that had two subs in it. The one in the foreground looked to be a VII, but the one in tha back - or "beside" the other sub - was longer and the conning tower was shaped identically to the XXI in SH3. So technically speaking - a Type XXI was spotted "in" SH5. Can someone who has the game and thus sees the screens confirm this?

I am trying to get him to let me play it some this weekend. He wants a couple of mods so I may trade some game time for making them - because I have to be able to use his game to test them, right!

Yea it definately is a XXI next to it in the picture, all I'm gonna say about this game is that its gonna take a miracle from the subsim guys to make it better. It would be sweet if they fixed it enough to run like the previous ones, and add boats in like SH4s U-boat missions did.

Default French surrender

Sorry to continue the derail but this is too much fun.

The French Ministry of Defense this morning announced that a French Navy destroyer, the FS Ouragan (Hurricane), surrendered to Somali pirates after a small outboard motor powered speed boat came alongside and fired a pistol towards the command bridge.

Wow, I guess this thread wasn't a complete failure after all. Nice spot. Not that anyone else will care...

Sorry for interrupting the anti-French spam with some random on topic post .

anyone mention Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys yet?

i think that was the phrase

picking on the french is a lot of fun and i'm no stranger to the effort, but few people know that the french are the ones who won most of their fights, ever

it's just that they lost a couple famous ones
(crecy, poitiers, agincourt, waterloo, trafalgar, vietnam, WW2, etc)
in between those, they won pretty much every fight they fought

unlike the english who lost most fights but won the few famous (and decisive) ones
I'm dutch and we learn all about our navy kicking the english one around on lots of occasions (De Ruyter sailing up the Chatham and all that) and then finally losing naval supremacy in the long run, which is no surprise for a tiny country and which is seen as logical rather than shameful
The English don't really learn about that, all they learn is that there were a bunch of fights with the Dutch and that the English won it in the end

interesting no?

anywho, anyone found any easter eggs yet?

The Royal Navy are still hanging their heads in shame after they surrendered to an Iranian gunboat:

They surrendered in the Gulf while the other armed forces were conducting some heavy fighting in Afghanistan - the Army and RAF just won't let them forget it.

@Rip:

I already posted that story, actually on the same side.
The true story is far mor glorious, as the french are most successful
anti-pirate navy in the region. Others are just envious.

They're the most successful because they don't give a damn about sinking the buggers, unlike the Royal Navy, which appears to care more about the rights of the pirates. Unfortunately, this is what 'tolerance' gets you!

the problem is the British rules of engagement. he did the right thing. attacking would have risked full out war with iran. if they're crazy enough to kidnap sailors they're crazy enough to go to war over that.
