Default Should I buy?

Hi all.
I find simulations like these quite daunting with all the key commands and technical jargon etc, but thanks to forums like Subsim, I managed to enjoy SH4 and play ok with the easier settings.

So after all the woes of the DRM and bugs of SH5, is it any better now with any of the mods released and the official patch?

And after all the technical woes, there's just one thing that can put me off... IT'S TOO COMPLICATED! so any newbie guides out there to help get me started?

Thanks

Its still ridden with bugs but the game in itself is gear towards the casual player and requires minimum techical and historical knowledge.

In the first place, it's too bugged, not too complicated. If you really want to see something complicated, you can try
Battle of Britain 2: Wings of Victory or Ka-50 Black Shark ... Or if you want an easier to play shooter, don't look for SH5, you can try Call Of Duty or Medal of Honor series ...

Welcome aboard!

As Noren said, it's pretty simplified compared to the other Silent Hunters. Tho, not overly simplified, but a tad.

But I'm sure the modders will do something about it in the future.

Thanks. I don't expect SH5 to be an arcade game, I like realistic sims, but I know the game manual is very basic and the in-game tutorial is poor so don't want to be put off by a steep learning curve. I'm prepared to put in some time to get the hang of it all, so hopefully I can find some noob beginner guides

It all depends on what "complicated" means to you. SH and sea maneuvers and navigation in general are not complicated. As long as you're willing to put a bit of effort into understanding them, there's tons of material you can read, they're very enjoyable and they make a lot more sense than most things you're forced to do in your life.

SH as a series is not a SIM, you don't need to work in the navy to understand it. This is a slow paced game where the main joy is to understand the big picture while being cramped inside a metal box with 2 peepholes, only using lines and angles. It's not unlike figuring out where you are in the world just by using a battery-free sextant, a clock and a star chart. It's not instant, but it's a well documented easy to follow procedure and it's very enjoyable.

SH5 however, although advertised as a friendly game for beginners is anything but (I;m not even talking about bugs here). A beginner relies on easy to read information and easy control. The game by default offers none. It's like playing a FPS without strafe buttons and without your weapons and ammo showing. I suggest you stay out for a while and get better at SH3 or SH4. Then see how the weather's like on the SH5 section
