yesterday a brand-new "Steel-Edition" was mailed to me including SH3 and SH4 without any protections and/or hazzles for a bargain at €12 (equal to $15).

By "Focus Multimedia Ltd"
is a version patched to 1.4b (you install it, it's already up to date)
and has no copy protection at all.

If you buy it from their web site (if possible) you are sure to get a copy-protection free version that installs as 1.4b

That's the one I am using. Installed, and applied GWX over it.

Neil also sells from this web site a version without Securom I think.
