Default NOT AN EGG but I think it's funny !

In the sub pen about halfway down is a guard without a rifle,
he is bent over the rail looking at something, then looks around worried, then looks back down.

I wonder if he had dropped his rifle in the water ?

Was it a French port?

I said " he dropped it in to the water "

not " he threw it into the water "

Englishmen and the french have been haggling for centuries, but I really cant understand why americans make fun of the french. I mean, France made not so small an effort agains the english during the american revolution and played a part in the american winning. Yet, americans look down on them. Am I wrong?

Yes and no. It started in 2003 when they opposed us on the Iraq invasion. It also goes back to the supposed French attitude of superiority in everything. But mostly it's just fun to have someone to make jokes about. It's stupid, but mostly harmless.

For the record, we like to pick on Canada, too.

It probably has to do with the failure of the French in military operations. The French, after the Germans invaded their country, decided to surrender. The Americans, on the other hand, kept on fighting. (Yeah, there was that whole French resistance thing, but really. Us Americans were using B-17s and B-24s to bomb Germany. The resistance only took out train tracks and stuff like that. Sheesh) After World War II, the French went on to lose a war to the Vietnamese. Again, not something the Americans would ever do. Before World War II, there was that little thing in 1918. The one where the French mucked around and never got anything done until the Americans decided to get involved and managed to finish things up in no time.

So, basically, it's a few accidents of fate that caused Americans to develop a stereotype. Besides, if you ask most Americans what the French had to do with the American Revolution, you'll get blank looks. People don't know their history.

That has a lot to do with the current anti-French attitude, but it didn't really start then. It's been going on for a while.

I think it started with this:

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/text/victories.html

Then there's the whole WW2 capitulation in 1940, which pissed off most brits, although many forget that it was the valiant sacrifice of the French army that allowed for the evacuation of the Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk. Also most forget that it was the French who were the most successful and feared soldiers in WW1. And then there's the Foreign Legion which make the Seals look like paintball players.

But hey, even I make friendly fun of them. Here's one for you:

Doenitz and Ho Chi Min walk into a french bar.
The barman takes a look at them and says: "I surrender!"

Sailor Steve's post #21 pretty much covered your question.

My answer is: No your not wrong.

As for the french in the american revolution.. they weren't too keen to help out until they saw that we could win it.

Naturally anyone that would stick it to the english, the french wanted to be apart of... but they wanted to make sure it was going to be favorable first.
