Attention! This message is for the ones that are deeply unsatisfied with the way SH5 presents itself, those who like or love the out of the box game are kind fully asked to ignore my message.
Gentlemen, I was thinking that maybe before start modding this game, maybe we should wait at least 6 months for the major bugs to be fixed and only after that will worth the modding. I am separating these two entities, one being the bugs (that can be fixed in best case scenario by devs, in the worst they can't be fixed even by them) and the other being the possible improvements (the modder's job, like the interface and so on). Even it's almost absurd to sell an unfinished product, maybe we should let them finish the game first, finish the core of the game. The game is a flop anyway in its present state, but I don't know, maybe in 6 months or a year it will be capable to reach the level of SH3 or SH4 patched games (not the modded ones, those are by far above SH5 out of the box game level). For example, I won't play it, it's unbearable, but I am willing to wait or even help in some way. And I think that GWX reunited or reformed team should try to mod the game after or if the major bugs are solved by the devs. That should be done in an centralized and united way, not by 1000 little mods that are not aware one of each other. The game is a fiasco in my opinion, worse than out of the box SH3 or SH4 from the playability point of view, but maybe, and I am putting emphasis on "maybe" there can be some hope to be fix it in some degree, not completely, but at least in some degree. I know that this game cannot be turned into a ultimate or a great game, not even into a simulator, but maybe into a playable hybrid. Right now, it's not even a playable hybrid. I won't suggest anyone not to buy it, I will tell everyone that doesn't own the game yes to expect for the worst and to fortify themselves with a lot of patience. And modders, please don't get me wrong, I am not telling everyone what to do, it's just an idea that might prove itself constructive. You all have my deepest admiration and respect for all your efforts. Last edited by Gunnodayak; 03-05-10 at 03:21 AM. |

Well, I've already said that some of the major modding efforts should be on hold, but I don't think it's fair or reasonable to hold people back on key tweaks that they just can't wait for. The interface port from SH4 is a giant blessing for instance, and I sure as heck would take that over waiting for a patch.
"Supermods" and major efforts on aspects like campaign or re-wiring the AI, damage and other key models in the game though should certainly wait for the official development cycle to reach a hopefully-acceptable close. I think we should get a head start on some things and learn the tools, but otherwise wait and see. But hey, if anyone wants to put in time and effort into anything right now - their time and choice! You shouldn't underestimate modders' free-willing instinct to tinker, so tinker they shall... |

Sure, but again... if they can be done quickly, why not? I don't think it's a waste of time, and I think most things are not likely to be seriously affected, let alone "killed" by patches. Just that sometimes it's a pain in the butt to transfer them from one version to another (and believe me, I know this first hand, having had to do a large amount of work helping Beery put together a working version of RUb for SHIII 1.3b after his previous releases were mostly under 1.2). But rarely is the work actually lost.
Again, though, small fixes aren't a bad investment now if they pay off for the players (and modders are players too). They give quick gameplay returns and will probably stay useful in the longer run. |

I get what you're saying, but I say bring on the mods. I just don't have faith that the game will be properly supported. Officially supported that is.

It's simple for me: metaphorically speaking, we have a Trabant now. The option are as following: - we throw it down the river; - if we will take the first option we have two more born from the first one: we will walk on foot (does good for health anyway ...) or we will try to buy some other car (but unfortunately there aren't so many in the area) - we are trying to improve this car at some time and in time, but always have in mind that it can never be a Mercedes, it was born as a Trabant and it will die like one, but at least it can die like a tuned Trabant for any consolation. This is my choice, my personal view. I really want to give a chance to this game, even thinking that now it's unplayable and unbearable. And I am willing to have patience for that, there's always SH3 or SH4 with supermods to be played. Last edited by Gunnodayak; 03-05-10 at 03:45 AM. |
