You can't review things that haven't been released, so the UK version can't be reviewed until the 5th March. Maybe they changed it because of that.

It's number 1 in sales right now in the adventure (WTF?) category, so the negative reviews don't seem to be stopping anyone. Once I get some playtime in I was going to post a review on Amazon that actually focuses on the game instead of the DRM. Also, I'll throw up a review on my blog and will put it up here if we don't get flooded with them before then.

I know people are mad/annoyed about DRM but I can't stand it when they go and ruin a game's rating like that on Amazon just because they don't like something about the game. I use the ratings to make purchase decisions and have noticed an increase of non-reviews like this which makes it hard for people actually shopping for a new game to play.

I think Gametrailers.com is one of the industry's most influential websites right now, so I'm interested to see what rating they give Silent Hunter 5. As a matter of fact, if you visit the site you can be the first to post a review for SH5 there:

That would be a real improvement if they changed it that way.
I just checked amazon.de (still on pre-order there). And there are no comments so far

Ubisoft have sold SHV as "action adventure" on their website.

That's like selling Flight/Farming Simulator as an RPG!

Did you not get the memo? There is no longer a "simulation" genre, or rather there is, but it's for The Sims.

I can promise you I'm not one of those people.

...for gods sake I will not argue to defend SH5. Because I cant.

The graphics is superb and the graphic is superb and the graphic is superb...

...the rest must be done by the modders....and several patches....

But, to be also positive: The graphic is superb!

The rest is SH3 Stock (from the games mechanic and the bugs)

Isnt´t it?

Considering this, we will have to thank the modders twice:

First for not only spending spare time on working on this game and being kind enough to release their work for free (the pay will be an unmatched amount of fame and glory at least).

And second for actually buying the game in the first place to be able to work
on it and making it worthwhile to buy the game for many other people at last !
(Not that anybody is buying the game out of pure charity with the community - but still...)

So far, I for myself have done and released only some interface work for SH3 and some textures for SH4 and that already taught me how quickly a hobby can turn into hours of work, depending on how perfectionistic you are.

Given the numbers of bugs already seen, I hope there'll be many patches to come. Surely the developers cant be making half-baked products which depend upon modders to make them fun and playable, that would be downright vicious.

Most bugs seems easy to find and should have been spotted during beta playing. Atlest now we know why there weren't a demo - the game is not ready 'as is'.

SH3+eyecandy+arcadish=0,8*SH5

I wonder about the old times, when games were complete and almost bug-free from the get-go: did they longer developing times or was it less of
a corporate-decision when to publish?

I cannot defend the game.

Let me give you a little background on why I bought it, and why I am putting my time into trying to fix it, despite despite the fact that it is, quite frankly, a pretty poor show at the moment.

I only got into PC gaming, oh jeez, I guess about 2 years ago.
Before that I was a console boy.
I didn't want to be, most console games are not really my thing. I just couldn't afford a PC.
Anyway, about 2 years ago I was finally in a position to finally afford a PC.
Bought it specifically to play SH4. (Silent Service 2 on the AMIGA had made a deep impression!)

By the time got here, the game was almost fully patched (1.4), and there was a lovely selection of great mods to chose from.
In fact, when I look at the games I have played since I got a PC, IL2, Rome and Med Total War, SH3, SH4, Oblivion, it's the same story every time. Someone else had done the hard work for me.
When I look at the forums on these games I see a lot of anger and frustration around about the release date. Eventually these games have been well patched up. Furthermore, there has followed a multitude of fantastic mods for all of these games.

I have been lucky enough to come to these games when they have been fully patched (NOT resolving all issues, I know that), and well modded up.

I never had to do my time in the trenches for any of these games.
I understand many people buying SH5 being pissed off. I agree, it does not seem to be a properly finished game.
Hopefully one day SH5 + Mods of choice will be a superb combination.
It may not happen, but I am hoping it will.

So I will take my turn in the vanguard, as part of the forlorn hope.

Maybe 2 years down the line someone a little bit like me, who has never played a Subsim before, will stumble across SH5 + whatever we have managed to make and enjoy it.

I reckon it is a bit premature to be swayed by a very small number of reviews when the game is yet to be released on some of the major markets (such as the UK).
