Best escape that always(so far) works is go deep fast while turning 180 degrees about.

At 100mtrs go SR and set tele at 1 knt. zig zag at 20 degrees and get on hydrophones.

If you have a DE on you hit D key and go deeper.

I use my S,D,E,A keys to control depth.

I'd like to add something that usually works for me in shallow waters, or those occasions where the water is deep but you can't reach a safer depth in time:

You can go to flank when you hear that DE rumble overhead. You will be in their baffles for a short time, but more importantly, you will need that speed to turn sharp and try to avoid the depth charges that are coming your way. Go flank, make a good hard turn and then center the rudder. Stay at flank until the last charge goes off (hopefully it goes off well behind you). Then go right back to 1 knot and stay nice and quiet like before. Repeat as necessary.

Yes and in addition to being in the best position w/ regard to the destroyer's ability to pinpoint your position, the noise from the DCs going off will make their ASDIC useless for the duration. A good time to put some distance between them and you and make some maneuvers.

To reiterate: In earlier sims such as AOD and SH1, going to a higher speed would turn Silent Running off, and would kill you if you forgot to reset it. The SH3 version is much better, as long as you don't forget to turn it off. If you surface it will still be set. At least this way if you give it a burst of speed and then go back to 2 knots, Silent Running will still be effective.

Thanks everybody.

Another question. If I am using the gramophone, does that subvert my SR status? I know in real life it would, but does SH3 simulate that?

BTW, I recommend downloading the sound files of period songs. It really adds the ambiance to the game.

The gramophone is not detectable as far as I can determine. For realism's sake I turn it off when attacking and evading.

It has been pretty well established that the gramaphone has no effect on silent running. Neither does sounding the bottom for depth.

Oh, absolutely. My music is strictly German, strictly 1930s and '40s.
