SH IV and V

1st I would like to thank you all for creating such a site!

I am in the middle of my Silent Hunter III addiction and was thinking about buying IV or maybe V, once it comes out, but I have seen a couple of sigs in the forums that have me worried.

Is there really a major issue with SH IV multi-player mode, where you have to be in UBI Softs servers or it will not run? Whats the story here?

I am not trying to start any drama, just want to hear it from the source, the gamers, what the problem is.

Thank you again for such a great site!

What you have seen are images that people are putting into their signatures to protest against the new digitial rights management that Ubisoft have developed. However, it is not known whether or not this system will be used in SHV and a lot of people are jumping to conclusions in the absence of fact. If you want to learn more about it, look at the SHV forums - where this topic should have been started in the first place, not here - and you will find hundreds of posts discussing it. Just take heed that nobody here knows anything about the final state of SHV, its game features or any DRM software it may use. You will see a lot of complaining, speculation, theorising, opining and rumour-spreading, but not one of us knows anything for fact until the game is released.

SHIV with one of the super-mods will be fun, too. this is what I've read in the respecting forum.
(myself, I haven't unpacked it yet, though)
SHV will come (that's for sure, because UBI already announced the requirements) with the need to be connected to UBI-servers in order to play. but see for yourself in the SHV-forum.

LOL Being a former US Marine Sgt. I know a LOT about speculating, complaining, and over all discontent BEFORE any any info is passed down from higher

I do apologize that I posted this here and not in its proper place. I will look into the bum-scoop in the other forums, but take it with a grain of salt.

Should I go back and play Vanilla SH3? I DL-ed the game from steam and installed GW Mod Gold right away and have been playing it ever since.

Never, ever go back to vanilla. Stick with GWX or try one of the other super mods out there.

Sorry if I came across as being a bit harsh, we've just got to the point of thinking "Oh God, another DRM thread". Welcome aboard, i'm sure you'll fit right in.

As for mods, carry on doing what you are. I only have experience with GWX3 Gold but I would say you've done the right thing. I would like to try NYGM (or whatever it's called), but i'm sure any of the supermods will be light years ahead of the standard game experience!

WELCOME ABOARD!

SH4 has much to offer, no matter which side you want to play.

SH5, like every new game that's been talked about here, is the subject of a lot of controversy. Ignoring the 'on/offline' question, how it will play is a total unknown at this point.

I came to SH3 rather late, merely 10 months ago. One thing I will say is that any mods available had been developed to a point where most if not all bugs were ironed out, some were merged with others and there was plenty of info on how to get my game where it is now. The mods in my sig are only the beginning of a total of 44 mods active on my game.

If I'd have come to SH3 in the beginning, it would have been a much longer road to the game I have now, which in my eyes is perfect. I've not had a chance to get bored yet and I've mentally stopped myself from adding any other mods for fear of screwing up the game that I've created through mod merging.

I'm quite happy to continue with SH3 for a couple of years but I will be avoiding SH4, I didn't like the look or the feel when I saw my friend playing it recently. As for SH5, well when I'm ready to buy that it will probably be selling for under a tenner and any issues with DRM will either be realised as unnecesary or a workaround/patch provided. I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of mods available in a polished state that will enhance it even further.

I have patience to wait for when something is right, it's the people that don't that drive the software companies to push unfinished work with dumb copy protection methods out into the marketplace, they know they'll make a mint despite any concerns or complaints.

Rather late, mate I have only been playing under a month!

I gave up WoW and refused to buy the poor counsel port that is Modern Warfare 2.

As stated earlier, I only have GW Mod Gold installed and the gave its great! I can only imagine how the game will be once I get the hand of other mods

Highly recommend Racerboys SH4 effects, it's great watching a tanker explode on the horizon in the dead of night. It changes all the smoke, flame and particle effects to that of SH4 and adds random distress flares when ships begin to sink, great for realism.

When I end up playing SH5 there'll probably be an SH6 about to be released where you have to go to a local Ubisoft HQ and let them take blood samples.
