I almost sunk the Norwegian ship, but just as I was about to fire the torpedo I was able to *just barely* make out the flag (this was around midnight). I'd been tracking the ship four 4 hours (game time) and set up a perfect 90-degree shot, had the unlit ship coming to zero degrees gyro when I just spotted the faint cross and then saw some color and the whole crew let out a sigh of disappointment.

So why are they running without lights? They're *asking* to be sunk!

The same ship 11 months later would be fair game, but I assume the "Flaggen" tool in GWX has accurate dates for neutrality and allegiance.

Oh well. At least I didn't fire. Door was open, finger on the trigger, straining to see the flag before he came to zero degrees on the gyro.

What a ride though!

I forgot about the 'enemy' part. Yes, if you sink a neutral (or friendly), that nation considers you an enemy for 24 hours.

Because in the stock game there were no lighted ships at all. They were created for a mod and ended up in GWX, so some are lighted and some are not, just like real life.

That's absolutely correct.

I know that feeling well, and yes it is quite the experience.

I sank a panamean tanker in convoy, unlit, bad visibility in feb 1941. negative renown ( patrol renown was around only 100pts ...) but i can live with it and think i was right to do that

in my current career an US-vessel was hit by me in spring 1941.
had very foggy sight and guns at stern and midships were enough for me to consider her "enemy". I then recognized my big mistake and hurried away. she had probably sunk but I was out of range already!
pheewww that was close
